Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is “hands-on” physical therapy. It includes skilled techniques used to help joints and soft tissue move better, reduce pain, and improve function—especially when stiffness, muscle guarding, or limited mobility is holding you back.

At Eastern Shore Physical Therapy, manual therapy is one tool in a bigger plan. We often combine hands-on care with targeted exercise and movement coaching so you don’t just feel better for the day—you build the strength and control needed for long-term recovery.

What Manual Therapy Is

Manual therapy may include techniques like joint mobilization/manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, and other hands-on methods to improve movement. APTA defines mobilization/manipulation as a continuum of skilled passive movements applied at varying speeds and amplitudes.

Why We Use It at Eastern Shore PT

Manual therapy can help create “space” for better movement—then we reinforce it with exercise.

Reduce Pain & Muscle Guarding

Hands-on techniques can help calm irritated tissue and decrease protective tightness.

Personalized to Your Needs

We choose techniques based on your evaluation findings, comfort level, and goals.

Improve Joint & Soft Tissue Mobility

When motion is limited, manual therapy can help restore movement so daily activities feel easier.

Combine With Exercise for Lasting Results

Clinical guidelines for common musculoskeletal issues (like low back pain and neck pain) often pair manual therapy with exercise and education.

Support Better Movement Patterns

Once motion improves, we retrain how you move with corrective, goal-based exercise.

What to Expect

Manual therapy sessions are typically brief and targeted. Depending on your needs, your therapist may use hands-on techniques on the spine, shoulder, hip, or other joints, and/or work directly with muscles and soft tissue.

After manual therapy, we usually follow with:

  • Mobility work (to keep the gains)

  • Strengthening and control exercises

  • Movement coaching for daily life (sitting, lifting, reaching, walking)

It’s common to feel mild soreness afterward—similar to a workout—especially early in care.

Who May Benefit

Manual therapy may be helpful for patients with:

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Back pain with limited mobility

  • Headaches related to neck tension

  • Shoulder stiffness or pain with reaching

  • Hip pain or reduced hip mobility

  • Joint stiffness after injury or time off activity

  • Pain that improves with movement but feels “stuck” at certain ranges

Not everyone needs manual therapy. We’ll discuss options after your evaluation.

Long-Term Recovery

Hands-on care can help you feel relief and move better—then we build on that progress. Our goal is to help you:

  • Move with confidence

  • Build strength and stability

  • Reduce flare-ups and prevent re-injury

  • Return to the activities that matter most
