Vasocompression

When your body is healing after an injury or surgery, swelling and inflammation can make it harder to move comfortably and slow down progress with exercise and mobility work.

Vasocompression is a recovery-focused treatment combining compression (gentle, controlled pressure) to help manage swelling and discomfort.

At Eastern Shore Physical Therapy, vasocompression is used to support your recovery, especially when swelling is limiting motion or making movement feel painful. It’s one tool we may use alongside manual therapy, mobility training, and therapeutic exercise to help you progress more comfortably.

What Vasocompression Is

Vasocompression uses a specialized sleeve or wrap around the affected area to deliver intermittent compression. This approach is commonly used to help manage post-injury or post-operative symptoms like swelling and pain.

Why We Use It at Eastern Shore PT

When swelling goes down and pain is better controlled, it’s often easier to move, exercise, and recover.

Helps Manage Swelling

Vasocompression is used in the post-operative setting to help reduce inflammation and swelling.

Works Best as Part of a Plan

We use it to support what matters most—moving better and building long-term strength—not as a stand-alone fix.

Supports Pain Control

Studies in post-surgical knee rehab have found adding compression may provide additional benefit for swelling and pain during activity.

Helpful After Hard Sessions or High Irritation Days

For some patients, vasocompression helps calm symptoms so you can keep progressing.

May Improve Comfort With Movement

When swelling and pain are better managed, range of motion and activity can feel more tolerable early in rehab.

What to Expect

If vasocompression is a good fit for you, your therapist will:

  • Place a wrap/ sleeve around the affected area

  • Set a comfortable compression level

  • Run the session for a short period (often 10–20 minutes, depending on your needs)

  • Re-check comfort, swelling response, and mobility afterward

Most patients describe it as a firm, rhythmic “hug.” You may notice the area feels less puffy and more comfortable afterward.

Who May Benefit

Vasocompression may be helpful for patients who have:

  • Noticeable swelling after injury

  • Post-op swelling or discomfort limiting range of motion

  • Joint irritation after activity

  • Pain and swelling that makes exercise difficult early in rehab

We’ll recommend it only if it supports your plan and your comfort.

Safety and Comfort

Vasocompression isn’t right for everyone. We’ll screen for health factors where compression should be used with caution (for example: circulation concerns, certain nerve conditions, or blood clot risk). Intermittent pneumatic compression devices are also used medically in some contexts related to circulation and clot prevention, which is why proper screening matters.

If you ever feel numbness, unusual pain, or discomfort during treatment, we adjust settings immediately.

Long-Term Recovery

Swelling control can make recovery easier, but long-term results come from what we build next:

  • Restoring mobility and range of motion

  • Rebuilding strength and stability

  • Training functional movement for real life

  • Creating a realistic home plan you can maintain

Vasocompression supports the process so you can move forward with confidence.
