Post-Op Orthopedic Treatment

Orthopedic surgery is a major step—rehab is where recovery becomes real. After a procedure, it’s normal to feel stiff, weak, sore, or unsure how to move safely. The right post-op physical therapy plan helps restore mobility, rebuild strength, and guide you back to daily life with confidence.

At Eastern Shore Physical Therapy, we provide structured, goal-based post-op rehab following your surgeon’s guidelines while focusing on what matters most to you—walking, stairs, work demands, and returning to the activities you enjoy. After many orthopedic procedures, gradual exercise progression is commonly recommended to restore function and strength.

  • Progressive strengthening to rebuild support around the joint

  • Balance and gait training to improve stability and confidence

  • Functional training for real-life movement (getting up/down, stairs, lifting, bending, reaching, etc.)

  • Education on pacing, precautions, and safe progression

Why We Offer Post-Op Rehab at Eastern Shore PT

Post-op recovery works best with a clear plan, steady progress, and guidance you can trust.

A Clear, Personalized Plan

We tailor your rehab to your procedure, your stage of healing, and your goals—so you know what to expect next.

Confidence Through Safe Progression

Our job is to help you move forward at the right pace—not rushed, not stalled—so you feel secure at every stage.

Range of Motion + Mobility First

Early rehab often focuses on restoring safe motion and reducing stiffness as healing allows.

Movement that Matches Real Life

We train the specific movements you need for home, work, and your normal routine, so progress translates outside the clinic.

Progressive Strength & Stability

We rebuild strength step-by-step so your joint has the support it needs for walking, climbing stairs, and daily activities.

What to Expect

Your first post-op visit typically includes:

  • Review of your procedure and any surgeon guidelines

  • Assessment of mobility, pain, swelling, and strength

  • A clear plan for exercises and progression

  • Home strategies to support recovery between sessions

Ongoing visits include hands-on guidance, targeted exercise progressions, and functional training to build toward your goals.

Every surgery and every patient is different, but post-op rehab typically follows a progression like this:

  • Phase 1: Protect + Restore Motion

    • Reduce swelling/ stiffness, restore basic mobility, and build early confidence with movement.

  • Phase 2: Rebuild Strength + Control

    • Strengthening, stability, and movement quality, so your joint is supported during daily tasks.

  • Phase 3: Return to Function

    • Walking endurance, stairs, balance, and task-specific training for home and work.

  • Phase 4: Return to Activity

    • Higher-level strength, conditioning, and (when appropriate) sport- or hobby-specific movements.

We always follow your surgeon’s precautions and timeline.
